The Premise

Minecraft, but civilisation matters.

Coglands begins as ordinary survival. You spawn into an untouched world with nothing but your hands, and everything that follows is exactly the game you already know: the first shelter, the first waterwheel, the first mine.

What changes is what comes after. Create turns cobblestone into machinery, machinery into production lines, and production lines into industry that can supply more than one person. Surplus becomes trade. Trade becomes settlements. Settlements need roads, rails, borders, and someone to speak for them.

None of it is scripted. There are no admin-built capitals waiting to be claimed, no factions handed out at spawn, no storyline to follow. The economy, the map and the politics of Coglands are written entirely by the people playing it.

What you'll build

Five systems, one world.

Each one is driven by players. None of them work without the others.

  • Industry

Build automated factories, production lines and industrial networks using Create, from a single waterwheel to a district that never sleeps.

  • Infrastructure

Connect cities, factories and nations with player-built rail, roads and bridges. Distance is a real cost. The map is only as small as you make it.

  • Nations

Found settlements, write a government, define who belongs, and turn a handful of neighbours into a state with a name people recognise.

  • Diplomacy

Form alliances, sign treaties, argue over borders and build the international politics of a world that has never had any before.

  • Economy

Produce goods, price them, run a business and trade across an economy with no shop plugin behind it, only what other players actually need.

  • “The interesting part of a civilisation server isn't the buildings. It's the arguments about them.”

FAQ

Questions,
answered.

Anything missing? The Discord opens shortly, and the answers still being decided land there first.

What version of Minecraft does Coglands run?

Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge. The version is chosen to match the Create ecosystem rather than to chase the newest release, so expect it to stay put for the length of a season.

Is Coglands modded?

Yes. Coglands runs Create plus a custom mod that adds the settlement, territory and civilisation systems. You install a modpack once through your launcher and connect normally.

Can I play solo?

Yes, and that's a design rule rather than an accident. You can build alone, run your own workshop and never join a settlement. The social systems are opt-in. They reward cooperation without punishing people who'd rather be left alone.

Is Coglands a roleplay server?

It's a civilisation server with a roleplay layer you can take or leave. The world is written as though it has a civil service: settlements hold charters, citizens appear on a register, and your character has a name and an occupation if you want one. That framing is there because it makes the politics worth arguing over. None of it is enforced, though. You can play Coglands as a straight Create SMP, never write a character, and still found a settlement, run a factory and sit in a nation.

Is the server whitelisted?

Yes. You apply through the Hub with your Discord account and link your Minecraft account. It keeps the world free of drive-by griefing and keeps the founding community small enough to actually know each other.

Do I need to be in voice chat?

No, and nothing is gated behind it. Coglands runs on cooperation, and a rail line between two settlements is a negotiation before it is a build, which goes faster in voice than in chat. That is where most of it will happen, and you're welcome to sit in a voice room and say nothing at all. Playing text-only closes no settlement, trade or office to you, and nobody will ask you to explain why.

Pre-launch

Be there from Day One.

The Discord opens shortly. It's where the founding community forms, where development gets argued about in public, and where the whitelist opens first, before a single block is placed.
